Óscar Hernández

Óscar Hernández has created an entirely new form of folk art.

Óscar Hernández is known for crafting lively, expressive sculptures made from heavy wire and mixed media. His work stands out for its energy, movement, and imaginative storytelling — a completely original contribution to contemporary Mexican folk art.

A New Approach to Folk Sculpture

Óscar creates animals, dancers, musicians, skeletons, and fantastical figures by shaping wire with extraordinary skill and precision. After forming the armatures, he solders the pieces together and then paints them with bold, vibrant colors. The result is an art form that feels both playful and technically impressive, full of personality and movement.

For many years, Hernández collaborated with his late wife, Susilo Juárez, who refined each figure’s features using paper maché. Today, he continues the tradition independently, creating metal-only sculptures that remain instantly recognizable for their character and originality.
